BioSTAR LLC is a research-driven biotechnology organization founded on decades of pioneering research into the structure and function of energy-converting membrane proteins. Its scientific foundation includes structural studies of fumarate reductase (FRD), a bacterial member of the Complex II enzyme superfamily, led by BioSTAR founder Dr. Cesar Luna-Chavez, as well as earlier research at the University of California, Berkeley, investigating lipids, lipoproteins, and lipid–protein interactions. Together, these studies established a framework for exploring how biological membranes regulate energy conversion, electron transfer, lipid transport, and cholesterol homeostasis. Today, BioSTAR integrates structural biology, biochemistry, and computational approaches to investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying hypercholesterolemia, cardiovascular and metabolic disease, aging, and other disorders, with the goal of advancing fundamental biological understanding and enabling the development of future diagnostic tools, preventive strategies, and therapeutic innovations.
